Statistics software that shows its work.
StatPro is a statistics application for college students and the professors who teach them. It shows how it reached a result instead of only handing over the answer.
The formula is on the screen, the numbers that went into it are on the screen, and so is the arithmetic between them. A student who gets a result they do not understand can read backwards until they do, and a student who gets it wrong can see which step went wrong instead of starting the whole thing again.

Six areas, one core.
The ground a first course actually covers, in the order a course covers it.
- Data entryGetting the numbers in, and keeping them in front of you while the work runs.
- Descriptives and graphsThe summary numbers and the picture that goes with them.
- Probability distributionsThe curves, and the areas under them that the rest of the course leans on.
- Diagnostic testingSensitivity, specificity and what a positive result is worth.
- Confidence intervals and t testsThe interval, the statistic, and the steps that produced each.
- ANOVA and categorical testsMore than two groups, and data that arrives as counts rather than measurements.
Every test takes either one. Type in the observations if you have them. If all you have is a mean, a standard deviation and an n, that is enough to run it, and the working is shown the same way.
The answer alone teaches nobody.
A tool that returns a number and hides the road to it moves the hard part rather than removing it. The student still cannot tell a right answer from a well typed wrong one, and the hour that was meant to go on reading the result goes on hunting for the mistake.
If you are taking the course
You get the result and the road to it. Every step is legible, so a number that looks wrong can be traced to the step that made it wrong. Nothing has to be reproduced by hand to be checked.
If you are teaching it
The arithmetic is done and it is still on the screen, which means class minutes can go on what a result means rather than on how to produce one. The steps are named the way a course names them.
