The four-write loop: the system learns

Your assistant does not make the same mistake twice, and you can open the file where it wrote the lesson down.

Before you start

An assistant that can read and write a plain text file. Unit 1 helps; it is not required.

What you leave with

Two plain files, MEMORY.md and INSTRUCTIONS.md, and the four-write loop prompt from /prompts/the-four-write-loop pasted into your assistant's standing instructions, with your four brackets filled.

The exercise

  1. Make a folder your assistant can read and write. Inside it, two empty plain text files: MEMORY.md and INSTRUCTIONS.md. That is the whole install.
  2. Open the four-write loop prompt. Answer the four questions on that page (where your files live, which model sweeps, when it sleeps, the one mistake you never want twice). The prompt rewrites itself around your answers as you type. Copy it.
  3. Paste it at the top of your assistant's standing instructions: the project file, the custom instructions, the system prompt, whichever your tool has. Point it at the folder from step 1.
  4. Correct it once, in conversation, about something small. Then open MEMORY.md. The line should be there with today's date, why it was wrong, and how to do it right. If it is not, your tool cannot write files, and you now know that before it cost you anything.
  5. Post that first correction in the room, in #wins, with the why and the how. A screenshot of the file counts. That is the checkpoint, and whoever posts first gets their build reviewed on the Friday stage.
Where it breaks, on purpose

The wrong fact that survives to Friday. Give it something wrong on Tuesday and check the file on Friday; if the sleep pass and you both missed it, you have learned why the weekly read of your own files is the whole maintenance.

The checkpoint. A post in #wins in the room: the first correction the assistant wrote into MEMORY.md, with the date, the why and the how. A screenshot of the file counts. A quiz does not exist.

Do it with somebody

Pair up: name the one mistake you never want your assistant to make twice, then swap files on Friday and check whether the other person's fact survived the sleep pass.

The door out of this unit

The free Friday session: post the first correction it wrote down for you, with the why and the how, and bring it.
