The long way round

Give me something
that only works with
expensive help.

I will rebuild it so it works without. I have done it with corporate training, with web development, with an executive peer program, and now with AI. It took me thirty years to notice it was the same job every time.

The classroom

Prudential Healthcare · professional trainer

Eight week courses. A room of adults, a system they did not choose, and one measure of whether I had done my job: could they still use it on Monday, without me standing there.

That is the same sentence I price work with today. I did not invent it as positioning. It is the only test I have ever known.

Along the way

The training I got

Before I trained anyone, somebody trained me

  • The Ultimate Sales MachineChet Holmes. Pigheaded discipline, and the idea that you do twelve things a thousand times rather than a thousand things once.
  • Franklin CoveyTwice, years apart. Habits before tactics, and the discipline of working on the machine rather than in it.
  • The Speed of TrustStephen M. R. Covey. Trust as an economic input with a measurable cost, not a soft skill.

Three teachers, one lesson. The system is never the hard part. Getting a human to keep using it is the hard part.

Then

The assembly line

Website Pros · about ten people when I joined

The job was to build websites better, faster and stronger. What I actually built was a production system: a repeatable line that turned a small design team into a 120 person operation and helped carry the company into what became Web.com.

Nobody asked for an assembly line. They asked for more websites. The line is how you get more websites without needing more heroes.

The room, and then the room I built

Vistage · member, speaker, workshop facilitator

My employer sponsored me into Vistage and I am still grateful for it. A room of owners who have heard every pitch teaches you fast: you cannot sell in one, you can only be useful in one.

Then the company hit financial and legal trouble and the budget was pulled. I was asked to rebuild the whole thing in house. So I did. I lined up the speakers, I spoke, I facilitated the workshops.

I did not think of that as a milestone at the time. It is the clearest example of the pattern I have. Somebody took away the expensive version and I rebuilt it so it ran without them.

Now

Same job, new machine

Northeast Florida · small business

It took a thousand people to run the line I built at Website Pros. It takes one to run the one I am building now, and that is the entire point. This time it is pointed at people with one location and no IT department.

I build the thing, I put it in a named person's hands, and then I break it in front of them so they know where it fails before it fails on them.

Thirty years and the job has not changed once. Only the tools did.

That is the whole pattern.

Hand me something that only works when an expensive institution is standing behind it, and I will rebuild it so it works when they are not. That is what I did with training, with web development, and with a room full of executives. It is what I am doing now with AI.
